Entering its 17th season, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival (WSMF) is located at the four-season Wintergreen Resort on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. The 2014 dates are July 7-August 3. Each summer, musicians gather from around the country to form the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra (WFO) as well as 40 students who form the Academy. July at the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy is a magical month. The professional and student musicians share a great sense of camaraderie and joy in our work together. The Wintergreen Summer Music Academy actually consists of six different programs: Composition Academy – 4 students String Academy – 36 students (violin, viola and cello) Wintergreen Quartet Fellowship Program – 4 students . . . a pre-formed, existing and advanced string quartet (new in 2014!) There will also be three week-long, instrument-specific programs: the Flute Summit, Oboe Seminar and Trombone Workshop (all new for 2014!) Students generally range in age from 16-30, with about half the student musicians being pre-college and half being undergraduate or graduate students. The level is typically quite high; in the past three years, students have come from Boston Conservatory, Boston University, Bowling Green, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Institute, Eastman, Florida Atlantic University, Hartt, Ohio University, Peabody, University of Michigan, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Northern Colorado, University of Tennessee, Virginia Commonwealth University and others. Many students have attended multiple summers. All groups are coached three times per week and each student receives a weekly private lesson; they participate in bi-weekly master classes and have multiple performance opportunities throughout the Festival, starting in the very first few days of the Academy. They have free admission to virtually all of the Festival’s more than 200 events and performances, with many concerts being presented by the members of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra (orchestral and chamber music programs). Academy students have two orchestral reading sessions with our internationally esteemed guest conductors while on the mountain. Student instrumentalists also work closely with the student composers, with each chamber music group premiering and professionally recording a new work each summer. Tuition, room and board total $3500 for the four weeks of the String Academy and Composition Academy, and significant scholarship funds are available, including two fully-funded Horizon Fund Scholarships for talented underrepresented students, as well as the new (full-scholarship) Fellowship Quartet Program. Members of the Fellowship Quartet Program will, in addition to attending the Academy, perform as members of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra and be featured in the Festival programming.
