Faculty and Visiting Artists

Legendary pianist and former Curtis Director Josef Hofmann's vision for the Institute was to "hand down through contemporary masters the great traditions of the past; to teach students to build on this heritage for the future." During the school's early years, instructors included Leopold Auer, Louis Bailly, Daniel Bonade, Carl Flesch, Mr. Hofmann, Anton Horner, William Kincaid, Wanda Landowska, David Saperton, Rosario Scalero, Carlos Salzedo, Marcella Sembrich, Leopold Stokowski, Marcel Tabuteau, Isabelle Vengerova and Efrem Zimbalist. Today several distinguished students of those initial faculty members teach at the Institute.

Currently 169 students from the U.S. and 18 foreign countries study with Curtis's celebrated 95-member faculty, which includes Richard Danielpour, Roberto Díaz, Leon Fleisher, Claude Frank, Pamela Frank, Gary Graffman, Jennifer Higdon, Ida Kavafian, Seymour Lipkin, Otto-Werner Mueller, Aaron Rosand, Joseph Silverstein, members of the Guarneri Quartet, and many of current and retired members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

In addition to one-on-one instruction with the faculty, Curtis frequently brings in world-renowned artists to work with its students. The visits range from master classes, orchestra rehearsals, coachings residencies and lectures, as well as public performances with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre.
