Because the Yale School of Music is a small and select community, our students enjoy an especially close association with a dedicated and inspiring faculty. While private studio lessons are central to a musician's education, a student's growth is immeasurably enhanced by regular exposure to other distinguished members of the faculty at the School, both within and outside the student's particular department or area of concentration. All of the performing faculty coach chamber music groups - a unique feature of the School. This makes it possible, for example, for a pianist to profit from the insights clarinetist David Shifrin has to offer about Brahms's clarinet trio. A percussionist might work for a semester with bassoonist Frank Morelli on Stravinsky's L'Histoire du soldat, and a string player could coach with pianists Boris Berman, Claude Frank, or Peter Frankl on any number of masterworks for piano and strings. In addition, several members of the history and theory faculty coach ensembles, lending their fresh  perspective to the performance of the chamber literature.
