One of Princeton’s outstanding assets is its faculty. A single faculty teaches both undergraduate and graduate students, all of whom have close contact with scholars of national and international reputation. The current student-faculty ratio is 6:1.
The department has been among the leaders of the field in graduate education and more recently, in the undergraduate arena. Here we have a variety of resources, including music theory courses that stress compositional work, electronic and computer synthesis facilities, beginning and advanced compositional workshops, independent projcets, and senior theses in composition. Music history has also become one fo the Music Departments pretigious programs, having an outstanding graduate program and a prestigious faculty. The study of music history, music in history, or music as history is an extremely broad field, and individual approaches and interests are encouraged once a student has a working knowledge of the underlying principles of the field. Course work ranges from the study of composers' manuscripts to work in ethnomusicology, oepra, 20th-century music, mediieval and Renaissance music, and other special topics. |
