Tanglewood Institute
Shirley Leiphon  855 Commonwealth Ave. Room 250 Boston,  MA,  02215

The Tanglewood Institute is recognized internationally as an outstanding educational opportunity for young artists and is the only program of its kind associated with one of the great symphony orchestras of the world. Here, under the guidance of distinguished professionals and in the presence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, young people devote themselves each summer to an artistic experience without parallel. For any student of high school age who enjoys being challenged by the highest standards, BUTI represents a unique opportunity; Tanglewood is a magical blend of the formaland informal, of joy and hard work. No one who spends a summer at Tanglewood leaves untouched by the experience. The spectacular panoramic landscapes viewed from the Tanglewood Institute’s West Street Campus provide an inspirational setting for the practice and study of music. Rehearsals, classes, and coachings occur throughout the campus in a variety of natural settings. The beauty of the Institute’s setting also includes the Tanglewood facilities, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the 5,000-seat Koussevitzky Music Shed, there are the 1,176-seat Ozawa Concert Hall, a 300-seat Chamber Music Hall, the historic Theatre, and several rehearsal spaces. Also for use by the BUTI students are the resources of the Tanglewood Music Center’s library, with listening facilities as well as thousands of albums and scores. Pianos for exclusive use by BUTI students and resident artists are generously provided by the Yamaha Corporation of America every year. It is impossible to list all the talented, dedicated, and charismatic people with whom Tanglewood Institute students comein contact each summer. Since 1966, BUTI has provided an extraordinary opportunity for students to immerse themselves in music. Workshops are offered in flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba/euphonium, double bass, percussion, and string quartet
