Personal Statement
Study with one of the finest teachers and performers in Southern California. All ages and all skill levels, including beginners, are more than welcome. Lessons are available in your home or in my studio.

"John has done a great job at teaching to my kids individually -- at getting to know them and their abilities/strengths/weaknesses and then working with those to keep them interested in playing the piano. They never complain now about practicing, and are always excited to play for their friends when they come over. We've had lots of different piano teachers over the years for our four kids as we've moved around. Most of those teachers have their own plans, regardless of who their students are, and I've learned that's just the wrong way to go about instilling children with a lifelong love of music. John has been exceptional at simply paying attention to my kids. If you can find a teacher like him, you'll be doing your child a great favor."
- Bobbie G., Parent

I am a dedicated teacher of students of all ages and skill levels. In addition to years of maintaining a successful private studio, I have taught piano at the Eastman School of Music as well as the Eastman Community Music School. My students have ranged from young children to the elderly, and from complete beginners to conservatory level pianists, and I have successfully prepared my students for recitals, performance examinations, college entrance auditions, and competitions. I am a member of the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC), California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), and Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

I am very fortunate to have received a world class musical education, beginning with studies at the prestigious Peabody Institute, through graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music, which has been consistently ranked as having the top graduate program in music in the United States. I have also studied with professors from the Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory, University of Michigan, Indiana University, Oberlin Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory, and New York University. I am passionate about passing along the first rate education I have received to all of my students.

Creative Emphasis
My teaching is unique in that I heavily stress the creative development of my students, in addition to holding them to the highest standards with regard to musicality, technique, and performance. While my teaching is based in the classical tradition, I also expose my students to varied styles of music, and assist them in acquiring a broad base of musical skills, including harmonization, improvisation, and playing by ear. I also teach every student the fundamentals of music theory and composition. This well rounded approach not only helps students to become more creative and versatile musicians, but also expands their musical horizons and leads to a greater sense of enrichment, fulfillment, and enjoyment in their musical studies.
