Personal Statement
Students receive 'custom' instruction suited to their individual style of learning and their personal goals. Recognizing that playing a stringed instrument is a process rather than a goal, emphasis is on learning the art of analysis as opposed to criticism. Master Classes are offered on a monthly basis and two recitals (a chamber music recital where students are encouraged to find friends or family to join them, and a traditional solo recital) occur each year. Social activities including picnics, concerts and celebrations offer opportunities to interact with students from other districts.
Ms. Hollander is a seasoned performer, having performed throughout the country, and with Itzhak Perlman and other Juilliard students, has authored a book entitled "Preparing the Performer", and has recently made a CD. She is also the inventor of the famous "Mouse-tro" mute, and has published many transcriptions for cello and piano.
Education / Training
Ms. Hollander holds two degrees in cello performance from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. There she was a scholarship winner and principle cellist with the University Orchestra and soloist with that orchestra. She became the youngest teaching fellow when she began teaching cello at the University in her sophomore year, and completed two degrees in four years. Upon graduation she was awarded the Ann Arbor Chamber Music Award and was recognized as an outstanding student. Prior to her university studies she earned regular scholarships to the Juilliard Preparatory School in NYC and performed often with Itzhak Perlman, Sandra Rivers, and other well known musicians. She was also a scholarship student at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan and performed as soloist with orchestra, and in the first high school orchestra to play at the White House. Most recently, Ms. Hollander added another Masters degree in Bioethics from the Medical College of WI.
