Personal Statement

Not only is music important for each individual's personal enjoyment and fulfillment, it can often serve to knit people together for a lifetime of enrichment.

With this in mind, I endeavor to teach skills, whether I'm working with cellists, pianists or violinists that will enable the student to attain a very high level of performance without having to correct bad habits. No teacher can claim 100% success in his or her efforts to accomplish this. It has been my great love and privilege to have encountered many wonderful aspiring musicians these past years and to have developed close relationships with many of them. I do not feel unique in this for music, if properly taught, sets the tone for mutual enjoyment and respect.

Education / Training

My initial lessons were begun at five years of age on the piano. At 11, I began playing cello and studied privately soon thereafter. I was in the Portland (Ore.) Junior Symphony, National MENC High School Orchestra, Oregon Symphony and later was Principal Cellist in a chamber orchestra in Ontario, Canada.

Some of my cello teachers have been Jerome Jelinek, (Univ. of Oregon), Warren Downs (Cleveland Symphony cellist), James Jamieson (Principal Cellist, Minnesota Orchestra), Gisela Depkat (Canadian virtuoso and professor of cello at three Canadian universities). I've attended master classes with Janos Starker, Lynn Harrell, Gary Karr, among others.

My undergraduate degree is in Music Education from University of Minnesota and graduate studies in literature and performance were done at University of Western Ontario where I studied with Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Ms. Depkat.

I have taught music in private schools in Canada and public schools in Tempe and Scottsdale, Arizona. I continue to perform professionally, usuallly in small ensembles. My teaching studio is in my home in an older area of Scottsdale, Arizona.
