Personal Statement
I play and teach the arabic tabla, aka doumbek or darbuka, riq, and frame drums from classical to folk with groups like Alsarah and The Nubatones, Zikrayat, and at NYCís live music Haflas.

I have a background in western music [piano, voice, and percussion] and play traditional music from around the middle east including, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, e. Africa and the Balkans.
Technique-wise, I started playing traditional arabic style, and in the last 6 years have incorporated the split hand technique into this playing. My teaching incorporates the best elements of western and eastern method. Listening, Saying, Playing, and Writing.

In my regular group classes, workshops, and private lessons, students learn technique, traditional rhythms from all over the region, accompaniment for music and dance, and group compositions.

With Raquy, we offer bi annual (march/ august) retreats in upstate NY since 1999, bringing together all levels of doumbek players and drum enthusiasts.
