Personal Statement

Background:
Having pursued music from a young age, my experiences as a vocal soloist and choir member have brought me all over the world, performing in such musical landmarks as the Sydney Opera House, Smetana Hall, and Carnegie Hall. I grew up learning both voice and piano, and my musical education has provided me more confidence and opportunities in all aspects of life than I ever could have imagined. I began teaching while pursuing my undergraduate degree in California and have since expanded my studio to include a wide spectrum of ages, styles, and experience levels. In 2012, I received my BA in Music with an emphasis in classical voice from Pepperdine University and have since gone on to complete my MM in Voice Performance from The Boston Conservatory. In August 2015, I relocated to NYC where I continue to pursue performance opportunities and grow my teaching studio.

Experience:
I began teaching private voice and piano lessons in 2010 while pursing my undergraduate degree, immediately recognizing the joy of helping develop a passion for music within any willing student. I have since continued to teach students of all ages, styles, and experience levels at a studio location, in student's homes, and in music schools. Since I began teaching, I've been most surprised by how much a musical education benefits any student in many aspects of life, whether that be in school, work, or other creative outlets. I encourage participation in any performance opportunity offered and have seen countless students take substantial steps in their training and enjoyment of their instrument through such experiences. Above all, I encourage constant dialogue between teacher and student to guarantee satisfaction, enjoyable learning, and anything else that drives the student towards musical accomplishment.

Lesson Methods:
Singing lessons will be tailored to the individual student's goals, interests, and experience level, and I encourage all voice students to take initiative when it comes to how they would like to develop as singers, whether that be in pursuit of a performance career, pure hobby, or stress relief. These lessons are broken up into two focuses: the first half of the lesson will focus on breathing and technical exercises, learning to warm up the voice in the healthiest and most beneficial way. The second half will focus on learning repertoire and building musicianship skills, such as reading music and performance technique. In my piano lessons, I will develop technical piano skills in addition to incorporating music theory, musicianship skills, ear training, and exposure to new and varied repertoire. For beginner students, I typically follow Alfred's Basic Piano Course (or Faber Piano Adventures for very young students).
