Personal Statement
Dr. Charles Hiestand is a professional composer, pianist, bass player, recording artist, choir director, film score composer, etc. He has a D.M.A in composition from the University of Washington in Seattle, a M.A. from Mills College in Oakland, and a B.M. from Berklee College of Music in Boston. He studied composition with Lou Harrison and piano with Margaret Chaloff.

Dr. Hiestand enjoys teaching and sees it as one of the primary components of his career as a musician. With most students he uses a four fold approach that involves the study of technique, classics, improvising and general musicianship.

Most lessons are on piano with theory, ear training, and composition. Lessons are process oriented, fun, and engaging. There is no other agenda then improving the students' abilities. The students set their own goals, whether it is Jazz or Classical, pure piano or an emphasis on theory and composition.

Master classes are available.

Dr. Hiestand teaches out of his home in the north Seattle area.
