Personal Statement

My guitar lessons are fun and relaxed. They are 100% centered on your goals for guitar and the time you have available to realize them. No irrelevant exercises and never any pressure or guilt for having a busy week and being unable to practice.

Life happens--I understand that. More practice will speed up your progress, but practicing your assigned skills for only 7 minutes a day with an additional hour of focused study under my instruction will bring you closer to your goals than traditional methods.

This instructional schedule brings nearly 100 hours of concentrated skill development to your guitar playing progress in a year. 100 hours will allow you to be able to master five to seven songs of your choice as well as giving you the ability to improvise your own chord progressions and riffs.

At your first lesson, bring in 5 songs that you want to be able play; if it is a fundamentally difficult song I will compose a simpler version so that you can learn to play with your favorite tracks right away.

Learning a new skill is frustrating at times, but my lesson format is designed to help you push through these phases so that your progress continues on a positive track.

Education / Training

I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina and attended a private school that placed strong emphasis on the arts and particularly upon classical music instruction and performance. I started playing instruments and learning music theory at age eight, beginning with piano and progressing to alto saxophone the following year.

Going to public high school my freshman year served to diversify my musical taste and experience. I started listening to popular and alternative music, purchased my first guitar and started planning for a career in performance. I studied guitar at Greenville's Fine Arts Center with Steve Watson, former Professor of Studio-Jazz Guitar at the University of Southern California.

I attended the College of Charleston and earned my degree in Music Theory and Composition with a concentration in guitar. While living in Charleston, I taught guitar lessons, fronted a rock trio, and played bass in a popular local metal band.

After graduating from college, I moved to Los Angeles, CA where I currently teach guitar and music theory.
