Madison Music Makers is a year-round program designed to teach string instruments to low-income children in their own communities. The organization endeavors to enrich the development of these children through the long-term mastering of music performance skills. Easy access for the children as well as financial support for the instrument and the instruction are provided. Our immediate focus is on the teaching of violin to children beginning in 1st or 2nd grades. In the first year we are offering classes in three Madison area community centers or after-school programs. In future years we will also expand the choice of musical instruments offered and the number of sites. Classes will be held after school and on Saturday mornings. Music Makers has an on-going association with the University of Wisconsin with music students who serve as assistant teachers/mentors as part of their for-credit work. The program provides for them both instruction and experience in teaching violin and in working with low-income/mionrity children. Our goals are: To bring young people of different backgrounds together in a community setting to share non-competitive music-making. To build disciplined musical and performance skills in a nurturing, non-competitive, and culturally rich environment. To inspire a high level of excellence, inspiring future success. To lay the groundwork for higher education. To eliminate barriers to participation for low-income young people, addressing both cost and access.
