Students at the School of Music at James Madison University enjoy the best of both musical and academic worlds. Madison is a highly selective state liberal arts university, having received almost 21,000 applicants for the 2007-08 freshman class of 3900. The average entering freshman SAT score is 1200, and about 30% of the student body is from out-of-state. The School of Music has 45 full-time and 17 part-time faculty members, and an enrollment of more than 420 B.M., M.M. and D.M.A. students in performance, music education, composition, conducting, and music industry. Each year about 450 students apply and audition for the 110 places in the freshman class.

In 2005, the School of Music joined a few other fine music schools on the prestigious roster of All-Steinway Schools. In 2010, the School of Music will open its new Performing Arts Center, which contains an additional an recital hall, a concert hall, and more practice rooms, faculty offices, rehearsal space, and classrooms.
