Although UTSA is a young university, the Department of Music has established a reputation as a leader among Texas university programs. With approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate music majors, the department is large enough to offer a complete curriculum with 11 major ensembles, numerous chamber ensembles and nearly 200 recitals, concerts, master classes and workshops per year. Yet it is still small enough that all students study with faculty, not graduate assistants. The UTSA Department of Music offers a music education comparable to schools whose tuition and fees are literally five to ten times our costs. A moderate scholarship at UTSA will pay for most of your tuition and fees, whereas a large scholarship at some schools will leave you owing thousands of dollars. The Department of Music is emerging as one of the best music schools in the state. Our programs are not only outstanding, they are innovative and unique. We are justifiably proud of our undergraduate programs in performance, music education, music business and composition, and our graduate programs in music education, performance, conducting and piano pedagogy. Students in these programs have procured positions in professional ensembles, been accepted to the country's top graduate schools, and won prestigious competitions. Through innovative programs such as our Institute for Music Research (IMR), we have outpaced other music schools in the state. The IMR is recognized internationally as a leader in the field, having published books, manuscripts and conference proceedings. A new strategic direction for the Department of Music began in the fall of 2003 with an Audio Recording and Technology Studio at our Downtown Campus. This all-digital recording and engineering facility was created to train all of our students, not just a few select majors, about aspects of sound production and recording.
