Why We Built an Online Music School Directory
There are certain routes students have typically taken to discover the music schools that they would like to apply to. Often they find out about programs from their
teachers in school, private music teachers, or a band director. They might learn about programs from friends, or they might find a magazine article listing
various music schools. But before BridgeToMusic.com it was very difficult to find a source that assembled all of the information in one place. If someone were to go online and research "music school directory" or "music schools", there wasn't a clearing house for all that information. The closest resources available to date have been a print versions of a music school guide or annual listings in music magazines. Fortunately, the internet has opened up the possibility for this same information to be readily available to anyone with access to a computer. Not only that, this information can be supplemented with additional statistics, more thorough descriptions, allow users to refine their search dynamically, make comparisons, and allow students to directly request more information from the schools of their choice. The time saved in contrast to previous strategies is staggering.
Our Extensive Research
Our music school directory and the lists of music schools, programs, workshops and festivals is the result of over a year of research. Bridge to Music.com is a composite of all the lists we found in our research. Whether it was library catalogues or various search engines, we did an exhaustive inquiry and compiled a thorough collection. If a student tried to find the information that we now have made accessible through our site, it would take them countless hours to accumulate all the information. Though with the advent of the internet, information is accessible, it still required someone to organize it and make it efficient to access.
What is Next for Us
Our plans for Bridge to Music are to expand the seed of our idea. Our initial goal was to be the most extensive music school directory in the United States. Now that we have accomplished that, we seek to expand the site to include Canada, Western Europe, and ultimately to have an international music school directory, which includes all of the programs throughout the world. After that we will expand and create a place for musicians in general that is organized and easy to navigate which would include not just major music programs but also a hub for private teachers to promote their services, informal music workshops and music festivals and children's music programs as well.
