Musicians Institute was founded in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), an innovative, full-time guitar program developed by jazz and studio guitar icon Howard Roberts. The concept – intensive, focused, professional training in contemporary music, designed and taught by working musicians and located in the center of the music industry – quickly caught on and within a decade MI had gained international renown as a leader in contemporary music education.
Today, MI offers Bachelor Degree, Associate Degree, and Certificate programs in a variety of disciplines including performance, with majors in Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, and Voice; and music industry career fields including Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist Development, Music Video & Film, and Guitar Making.
Over the past three decades, tens of thousands of students from every part of the world have launched their music careers after attending MI. The combination of focused, practical education through hands-on experience, professional faculty, world-class facilities and equipment, and location in the center of the worldwide entertainment capital make MI unique among contemporary music schools. Although it has grown enormously in both size and scope, the spirit of community and innovation that inspired MI students, teachers and staff from the beginning remains at the heart of the MI experience.
